Why are they called Wisdom Teeth?

Well on Friday morning I got mu wisdom teeth out. I did okay until today. I think I have a dry socket. And holy crap it hurts. You think all that I have been through I would be okay and tolerate it but wow I am being such a baby. I don't know what my deal is. But why do they call them wisdom teeth? Anybody? Is it because you are smarter when you get them out? Who knows all I know is that it sucks to get them out.
